Once upon a time, I remember reading a style blog discussing the use of a “third piece” to finish a look (shoes don’t count). The third piece could be an extra layer, like a cardigan, jacket, or vest. Or it could be a statement accessory, like a scarf, hat, or amazing necklace. The idea is that this third item is the one that will bump your style up a notch and pull your look together and it’s one that has stuck with me.
I would have to say that most of the time I would agree. Anyone can put on a pair of pants and a shirt. In fact, you kind of have to according to the “no shirt, no shoes, no service” rule! 🙂 That’s why it’s so much easier to be “stylish” in cooler months – the layering piece is so much easier – at least for me.
I think this is a part of getting dressed that I’ve been much more willing to do since putting more effort into my look. In the past I would just throw on some bottoms and a top and call it good – especially when I was rushed or indecisive in the mornings. Now, I realize the power of that third piece in making a complete outfit.
Originally, I had planned to only wear the jeans and blush-colored tee. But I was feeling “incomplete”, like there was something I needed. So, at the last minute I remembered the third piece rule and added the extra layer. My choices were my longline cardigan or this utility jacket – I went with the jacket just because the weather is blah – and I love the green and blush combo. I think a scarf would have been just as great.
